Jane Fonda pulls a "don't you know who I
am" at a restaurant and gets told off (updated 04/16/05)
There are so many tales of some
celebrity getting their comeuppance after acting badly. This is
universally thought to be a false story. It's been floating
around on email for a little over one year. The attribution at
the end of Sir Scott's Oasis Steakhouse is new and doesn't exist
in the original.
It has every earmark of a false
story: A second-hand story in which neither the actual
participants nor the writer are named. No one has ever come
forward to stake any claim to being the woman, her uncle or the
actual writer. The supposed steakhouse had no name or one of
five names (Sir Scott's Oasis, Rocky Mountain Pasta Company,
Land of Magic Steakhouse, Silver Dollar, Longhorn Bar & Grill).
However, employees of Sir Scott have told Snopes that Fonda had
indeed been in the restaurant once when there was a long waiting
list. According to them, Fonda simply opted to leave and
there was no confrontation and no flaunting of her celebrity
status.
The first story like this about
Fonda and Turner surfaced in 1996, thanks to Rush Limbaugh, but
he didn't give any more information than what is found here.
Snopes
reports that this scenario seems highly unlikely given Fonda's
own words in 1994 about what she does when not getting service:
"If you're ever in a situation where you're not getting served
or you can't get what you need, just cry," she recommends.
Fonda, who attended the Goodwill Games in Russia with her
husband, Ted Turner, said she tried the crying game when an
elevator operator in Moscow was too busy reading a letter to
take her upstairs, and once again when she couldn't get served
in a restaurant. Worked every time."
One woman wrote me and claimed
that a relative of hers actually witnessed this incident. I
told her I'd be glad to change my article if the relative would
provide the details, but that never happened. Many who say that
some relative or another either knows this is true or witnessed
it find out, after pressing the relative for actual details,
that they had only heard the tale. So far, not one person has
come forward to claim, with actual times, dates and places, that
they were an actual witness to this incident, including anyone
at any of the named restaurants. Doesn't that sound a little
strange when verifying such a tale would provide them with their
15 minutes of fame?

This Restaurant owner
is a hero
On America FM 100.7 (A local radio station) was doing one of their "Is anyone
listening" bits this morning. This first one was, "Ever have a celebrity pull
the 'Do you know who I am' routine?"
A woman called in and said that a few years back, while visiting her cattle
rancher uncle in Billings, MT., they had occasion to go to dinner at a
restaurant that does not take reservations. The wait was about 45 minutes. Lots
of other rancher types and their spouses were already waiting. In comes Ted
Turner and Jane Fonda. They want a table. The hostess says they'll have to wait
about 45 minutes.
Jane Fonda asks the hostess if she knows who she is. "Yes, but you'll still have
to wait 45 minutes."
Then Jane says, "Is the manager in?"
The manager comes out, "May I help you?"
Do you know who I am?" ask both Jane and Ted.
"Yes, but these folks have all been waiting already and I can't put you in ahead
of them."
Then Ted asks to speak to the owner The owner comes out. Jane again asks, "Do
you know who I am?"
The owner says, "Yes, I do. Do you know who I am? I am the owner of this
restaurant and a Vietnam Veteran.
Not only will you not get a table ahead of all of my friends and neighbors here,
but you also will not be eating in my restaurant tonight or any other night.
Good bye."
To all who received this email. This is a true story and the name of the steak
house is
Sir Scott's Oasis Steakhouse 204 W Main, MANHATTAN, MT 59741 (406) 284-6929
The story left out one important part. The owner of the restaurant told Ted
Turner that he was a Vietnam Vet and that he (Ted) would be welcome in his
restaurant but Ted would have to get that bitch traitor out of his establishment
because he would not serve her under any circumstances. I live part of the year
in West Yellowstone, MT and eat from time to time at the Oasis.
Keep passing this on.
We never forget the unprosecuted traitor! And let's not forget what "our gal"
Hillary said to the troops in Iraq!!! "This war has no support from the American
public" !!!!!
